All About That Base…Boards

The importance of baseboard and wainscoting installation in a home

The architectural design of a home doesn’t stop at the front door. While the exterior is important, the interior is equally as significant. Adding architectural lines to the interior of a home can be achieved a few ways; one of the easiest is through wainscoting and baseboard installation. Although relatively simple details, here are some of the benefits wainscoting and baseboard installation provide.

Baseboard Installation

Baseboards, also known as skirting boards or base moldings, consist of a (usually) wooden board attached to the junction of the floor and the wall, see here. While sizing varies, baseboard installation usually reaches around ankle height.

Aside from obvious decorative purposes, baseboard installation is an important aspect of protecting your walls. Often times, baseboards will take the brunt of any knocks, scuffs and damage from mops, brooms and vacuums, which is ok because they are easier to clean and repaint than your walls.

Baseboard installation is also important for creating smooth lines and avoiding sudden juxtapositions. When laying flooring down, it is often very difficult to create a perfect fit all the way across. In this way, baseboards help bridge the gap between the floor and wall, while also helping to hide any uneven lines, inconsistencies and/or awkward transitions.

For those who are opting for a simpler décor scheme, your baseboard design doesn’t have to be bold. Choosing a thin model and painting it in the same shade as your walls can easily minimize it.

Wainscoting Installation

Similar to baseboards, wainscoting consists of a (generally) wooden trim attached to the wall. The difference is wainscoting is usually placed about one-third the way up the wall. Sometimes wainscoting installation also consists of paneling which bridges the gap between the trim and the baseboards.

Wainscoting installation protects walls from scratches and damage, making it a great addition to high-activity rooms such as entryways, bathrooms, eating areas, playrooms, dens, etc.

Like baseboards, wainscoting comes in a variety of styles, colours and sizes. This gives you the option to make it as intricate or decorative as you’d like and it means you can easily match the design with the décor throughout the rest of your home.

For when you want to add an architectural edge to the interior of your home, baseboard and wainscoting installation is the way to go. Aside from décor, both wainscoting and baseboards will help protect your walls and give your home even lines. Sometimes, even the simplest detail can make all the difference!
